Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), sending shockwaves across the state’s political landscape and stirring fresh debate about the future of the ruling party in the oil-rich state.
Although details surrounding his resignation are still emerging, sources within the Government House in Yenagoa confirmed that the governor’s decision followed a series of internal disagreements with key PDP stakeholders in the state.
A top government aide who pleaded anonymity said the move “did not come as a surprise” as there had been “mounting tension and unresolved issues” within the Bayelsa PDP in recent weeks.
According to the aide, “The governor has been under serious pressure from different political blocs. His decision to resign is part of a bigger political realignment that might redefine Bayelsa’s political structure ahead of the next election.”
The sudden exit of Diri, who won re-election on the platform of the PDP, has left many party members unsettled, with political watchers predicting a wave of defections and a possible shift of power alliances in the state.
