The Ogun State House of Assembly has taken decisive steps to address the persistent traffic gridlock along the Lagos–Abeokuta expressway, particularly around the Toll Gate and Papalanto–Ewekoro axis, caused by ongoing construction works on the road.

The Assembly, during plenary presided over by Speaker Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, invited the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, and officials of Craneburg Construction Company to appear before the lawmakers for deliberation on lasting solutions to the gridlock.

The Speaker’s directive followed presentations by a former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, and the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sheriff, who lamented the growing hardship faced by commuters on the route.

They noted that the deteriorating sections of the road had worsened traffic congestion beyond what the State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE) could control.

Consequently, the Assembly resolved that both the Commissioner and representatives of Craneburg Construction should appear before it on Tuesday, October 28, at 2:00 pm for an interface on the matter.

In another development, the Assembly passed a resolution urging the state government to ensure the establishment and resuscitation of functional sick bays in all public primary and secondary schools across Ogun State.

The resolution, sponsored by Hon. Damilola Soneye, was adopted following a motion moved by him and seconded by the Majority Leader, Hon. Yusuf Sheriff.

Opening the debate, Hon. Soneye stressed that providing sick bays in schools would ensure prompt first aid attention, facilitate early diagnosis, and prevent avoidable health risks among students.

Other lawmakers, including Hon. Olakunle Sobukanla, Hon. Yusuf Amosun, Hon. Babatunde Tella, Hon. Damilare Bello, Hon. Waliu Owode, Hon. Oluseun Adesanya, and Hon. Lukman Adeleye, supported the motion, emphasizing the need for the facilities to be manned by qualified health professionals.

The House further urged the Ministries of Health and Education, Science and Technology to collaborate in developing a standardized school health policy framework.

It also recommended employing graduates of the Ogun State Polytechnic of Health Technology, Ilese, to manage the proposed school sick bays, while encouraging private schools to establish first aid units and health clinics.
