The All Progressives Congress in Ward 4, Sabo, Sagamu, has reaffirmed that the indefinite suspension of former governor and current Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, remains in full force.
The party insisted that the National Working Committee lacks the authority to overturn the decision, which was imposed by the ward executives according to the party’s constitution.
The Secretary of Ward 4, Aduroja Oluwole, speaking alongside Ward Chairman Adebayo Ismail at a press briefing on Thursday, explained that the suspension followed Daniel’s alleged refusal to honour invitations to defend himself before an internal investigation panel.
Oluwole said, “Whilst Article 21(5)(vii) of the Constitution grants the National Working Committee the power to suspend erring members, that power does not in itself abrogate that of the Executive Councils, nor does it subject their decisions at any level to the review of the National Working Committee.”
“The exercise by any Executive Council of its disciplinary power, including the power of suspension such as that made in relation to Senator Gbenga Daniel, is subject only to appeal as outlined in Article 21.4.”
He added that the directive from the National Secretary to review or nullify Daniel’s suspension “is misplaced and has no foundation in the Party’s Constitution.”
The Ward 4 APC outlined that the senator’s suspension stems from alleged anti-party activities during the last general elections and claims that he attempted to obstruct justice during the Election Petition Tribunal proceedings.
The party stated, “These and many more are the unchallenged anti-party activities of the suspended senator. We therefore reaffirm that the suspension of Senator Otunba Olugbenga Daniel remains in full effect.”
Daniel’s spokesperson, Steve Oliyide, dismissed the allegations, describing the suspension as politically motivated to block Daniel from contesting the 2027 senatorial race.
He noted that Daniel had actively supported the APC in past elections and contributed financially to campaigns despite being sidelined by the state leadership.
Oliyide also questioned the legality of a suspension issued in a ward where Daniel is not even registered, saying, “How can he be suspended in a ward where he is not registered?”
