The Federal Government has ordered the shutdown of 41 Federal Unity Colleges following concerns about rising insecurity in several parts of the country.
The decision, issued through a circular dated November 21 and approved by the Minister of Education, takes immediate effect.
According to the ministry, the move became necessary due to recent security threats. It directed principals of the affected colleges to enforce the closure at once.
The circular, signed by the Director of Senior Secondary Education, Hajia Abdulkadir, stated that the safety of students and staff must be treated as a priority.
In her words, “Sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches, the Honourable Minister has approved the immediate closure of the listed Federal Unity Colleges. Principals of affected colleges are to ensure strict compliance.”
The shutdown affects schools across the North West, North East, North Central and parts of the South.
The ministry said it is monitoring developments and will announce further directives as the situation unfolds.
