The Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has inaugurated an eighteen-member State Technical Committee to address the growing number of out-of-school children in the state. The event took place at the ministry’s conference room in Gusau over the weekend.

Inaugurating the committee, Commissioner Malam Wadatau Madawaki described the move as a critical step in tackling the state’s out-of-school crisis and reinforcing the government’s commitment to ensuring access to quality education for every child.

He cited the Universal Basic Education Commission’s 2018 survey, which showed the number of out-of-school children in Zamfara rising from 701,086 to 1,068,786 by 2024, emphasizing the urgent need for coordinated action.

Madawaki stressed that education is a fundamental right, urging the committee to develop strategies that respect the cultural and religious context of communities while promoting enrolment.

He noted that traditional institutions, religious leaders, and community stakeholders would be actively involved in reintegrating children into schools.

Representatives from the Zamfara State Universal Basic Education Board and UNICEF assured their support, promising collaborative efforts to identify and enrol more children, with a special focus on girls.
