The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month discount window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, as part of efforts to improve road safety and strengthen security across the state.

The approval was granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, according to a statement issued on Wednesday via the official Facebook page of the Lagos State Government.

The Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency, Rasheed Muri-Okunola, disclosed the decision and described the initiative as a citizen-focused measure designed to encourage voluntary compliance among vehicle owners.

He said clear and legible number plates remain critical to effective traffic management, vehicle identification, and public safety, noting that faded or unreadable plates create challenges for law enforcement agencies and weaken crime detection efforts.

“The Lagos State Government has approved a three-month rebate window for motorists to replace faded and unreadable vehicle number plates, as part of renewed efforts to enhance road safety, improve vehicle identification, and strengthen security across the state,” the statement read.

Muri-Okunola explained that the discount was introduced to reduce the financial burden on motorists and provide adequate time for vehicle owners to replace worn-out plates without pressure.

He, however, noted that the government did not disclose the percentage of the discount to be offered during the rebate period.

According to the state government, the rebate applies strictly to vehicles with faded, worn, or unclear number plates and does not cover new vehicle registrations.

Motorists were advised to visit the MVAA One-Stop Centre in Oshodi or any MVAA office across the state to access the service.

The government also cautioned residents against patronising unauthorised agents, warning that such actions could expose motorists to fraud.

It added that legible number plates support digital vehicle tracking systems and crime prevention initiatives, stressing that the policy aligns with the state’s approach of balancing enforcement with empathy.
