A somber atmosphere engulfed the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State on Wednesday following the sudden death of a final-year student, Nwachukwu Omiko, who reportedly slumped and died while playing football on the school’s sports pitch.
Omiko, who was studying in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was participating in a casual match with fellow students when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses, he collapsed unexpectedly in the middle of the game, causing panic among the players and spectators.
“He just fell. We all rushed to help, trying to revive him, but nothing worked,” one of his friends recounted. “We immediately arranged to take him to the hospital, but we were told he didn’t make it.”
Omiko was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
The institution’s Chief Public Relations Officer, Ubadire Agua, described the incident as “deeply painful” and extended the university’s condolences to the deceased’s family and friends.
“This is a painful loss to the entire university community,” Agua stated. “Despite all efforts to save Mr. Omiko’s life, he could not be revived. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Maduebibisi Ofo Iwe, extends heartfelt sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, especially those in the College of Engineering and Engineering Technology.”
The university management has also advised students to prioritize their health and undergo medical screening at the institution’s health services upon resumption.
“We urge all students, particularly those with known medical conditions, to avoid strenuous activities and engage in regular health checks,” the statement added.
The incident has revived memories of a similar tragedy earlier in January when a young footballer, Adeyemi Adewale, collapsed and died during a football match in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.
He was representing Ilesa West Local Government Area in a local competition when he slumped and was later confirmed dead at the hospital.
