The dream of turning Abeokuta into a global hub for polo and tourism took a giant leap forward as Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Abeokuta Polo Club.

The event, held at the Abeokuta Polo Estate along the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway in Kobape, marked the commencement of a visionary sporting and economic development project.

Represented by his Deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Governor Abiodun described the project as “long-awaited but perfectly timed,” especially as Ogun State prepares to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged Gateway Games 2024.

“This initiative could not have come at a more appropriate time. It aligns with our administration’s commitment to making Ogun State a preferred destination to live, work, and play,” he said.

The governor commended the President of the Abeokuta Polo Club, Dr. Sherif Abdulrahman Adams, for his bold vision and leadership.

“This is more than a sporting facility. It is a project with immense socio-economic potential—one capable of attracting global polo players and enthusiasts, stimulating tourism, and creating investment opportunities in our dear state,” Abiodun remarked.

He further called on investors to explore the hospitality, infrastructure, and leisure opportunities surrounding the club, pledging that the state government would continue to provide an enabling environment for such ventures to flourish.

Traditional rulers also lent their voices in support of the landmark project. The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Dr. Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, who chaired the occasion, expressed delight that such a development was happening during his reign.

“This is a classic and prestigious initiative. Polo is not only exciting but also culturally enriching. I encourage all interested citizens to support the development of this club,” he said.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, also expressed strong support for the project, praising its potential to create opportunities for young people in the state.

“This polo club will go beyond just sports—it will provide real jobs and open doors for many of our youths once the facilities are up and running,” he said.

He added that the Egba Council of Obas is fully committed to supporting the success of the project.

In his welcome address, Dr. Sherif Abdulrahman Adams said the project would birth a world-class polo facility aimed at elevating the status of Abeokuta in the global polo scene while also creating a ripple effect of development.

“We are not just building a club; we are building a legacy that will contribute meaningfully to Abeokuta’s socio-economic transformation.”

“Our goals include boosting tourism, attracting visitors, supporting local businesses, and promoting Abeokuta’s rich culture and heritage,” he said.

The ceremony also featured the decoration of the Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba (Dr.) Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, as the Grand Patron of the Abeokuta Polo Club. In addition, several notable figures were honored as founding and honorary members of the club.

They include the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker; respected statesman High Chief Alani Bankole; Apena Bankole; Oba Saka Adelola Matemilola, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom; Oba Adedapo Tejuosho, the Oshile of Oke Ona Egba; and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the former Governor of Ogun State, among others.
