Arsenal silenced the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday night with a confident 2–1 win over Champions League holders Real Madrid, sealing a resounding 5–1 aggregate triumph to book a place in the semi-finals for the first time in 16 years.

With a dominant 3–0 advantage from the first leg, the Gunners arrived in the Spanish capital with momentum and composure, a combination that ultimately saw them hold their nerve against the 15-time European champions.

Bukayo Saka opened the scoring for Arsenal after missing a penalty earlier in the match, while Gabriel Martinelli sealed the victory in stoppage time, dampening any hopes of a comeback from the Madrid faithful. Vinicius Junior had earlier equalized after capitalizing on a defensive lapse.

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, an elated Declan Rice said, “We knew we were going to suffer but we also knew we were going to win. It’s such a special night for this club, a historic night… we want to win this competition.”

Madrid, known for their dramatic comebacks on this stage, found themselves short of ideas against a disciplined Arsenal backline. The La Liga giants managed only a handful of half-chances, and despite their aggressive push, they couldn’t threaten goalkeeper David Raya for much of the game.

“It’s a difficult moment,” said Madrid midfielder Lucas Vazquez to Movistar. “It was a difficult game. We didn’t have all the chances we would have liked. We needed a bit more with the ball, maybe more patience to break through a very well-organized defence — they did their job.”

The game wasn’t without controversy. Arsenal were handed a penalty after a VAR review spotted Raul Asencio pulling Mikel Merino during a corner. However, Saka’s attempted Panenka was read and saved by Thibaut Courtois, firing up the home side briefly.

Moments later, Real thought they had a penalty of their own when Kylian Mbappe went down under pressure from Rice. But following a lengthy VAR check, French referee Francois Letexier ruled in Arsenal’s favour, deciding there was no foul.

Martin Odegaard, once a Real Madrid player, helped orchestrate Arsenal’s opener in the 65th minute, linking with Merino before the latter slipped in Saka, who coolly dinked the ball past Courtois to make up for his earlier miss.

Madrid’s only goal came minutes later, as Vinicius Junior capitalized on William Saliba’s momentary lapse and fired past Raya to restore some hope. But it was short-lived.

With 15 minutes remaining, Mbappe was forced off with an ankle injury, and Arsenal put the game beyond reach when Martinelli calmly converted in added time following another clever assist from Merino.

Arsenal’s triumph marks only their third time in history reaching the Champions League semi-finals. Mikel Arteta’s men will now face Paris Saint-Germain, who edged past Aston Villa, in a high-stakes semi-final showdown.

For Real Madrid, it was a night of unfulfilled expectations. Their hopes of yet another miraculous comeback fell flat against an Arsenal side that simply refused to be rattled.
