Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his decades-long association with the party he helped found.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of Jada 1 Ward in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku announced his resignation with immediate effect, citing irreconcilable differences and the party’s deviation from its founding principles.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku declared in the letter. “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 and was twice the party’s presidential candidate, expressed gratitude for the opportunities given to him by the PDP. However, he noted that the current direction of the party no longer aligns with the vision that birthed it.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he said. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

While Atiku did not immediately reveal his next political move, the resignation has sparked renewed speculation about his future plans ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Political observers say the development could have major implications for the opposition party, especially as it prepares to reposition ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Atiku concluded his letter by wishing the party and its leadership well.

“I wish the party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support,” he wrote.
