A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja on Wednesday granted former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), his wife and son bail in the sum of ₦500 million each.

Justice Emeka Nwite admitted the defendants to bail after their arraignment on a 16 count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The charges are linked to alleged money laundering and financial transactions said to be worth about ₦9 billion.

In his ruling, Justice Nwite ordered that each of the defendants must provide two sureties in like sum. The sureties are required to own landed properties within Maitama, Asokoro or Gwarimpa districts of Abuja.

The judge further directed that the title documents of the properties be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court. The sureties are also to depose to affidavits of means to confirm their financial capacity.

Malami was ordered to deposit his international passport and other travel documents with the court. He is also barred from leaving the country without the court’s permission.

The court equally directed the defendants and their sureties to submit two recent passport photographs each to the court registry.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, Justice Nwite ordered that Malami be remanded at the Kuje Correctional Centre.

The court fixed February 17 for the commencement of trial in the case.
Malami, his wife and son are facing prosecution by the EFCC over allegations of money laundering.

The former minister has been in the custody of the anti graft agency since December 8, after he reportedly failed to meet the administrative bail conditions earlier set by the commission.

On December 18, 2025, a Federal Capital Territory High Court upheld his continued detention, with Justice Babangida Hassan ruling that the EFCC acted within the law in holding him.
