Fresh concerns have emerged over the integrity of the rehabilitated Car Wash, Adatan Road in Abeokuta, Ogun State, after a section of the road collapsed again just days after it was reopened to motorists following remedial repairs.
The affected portion of the carriageway caved in at the centre, leaving a deep depression with broken asphalt and exposed stone base. Motorists have since been forced to slow down and carefully manoeuvre around the damaged section to avoid accidents.
The road, which was reopened about three weeks after undergoing reconstruction, had initially developed defects within seven days of its completion. The Ogun State Government attributed the earlier failure to floodwater caused by blocked drainage channels, maintaining that the damage was not due to poor construction.
Following the incident, the government closed the affected section to carry out remedial work before reopening it to traffic a few days later.
However, the latest collapse, which occurred barely three days after the repairs were completed, has renewed public criticism over the durability and quality of the reconstruction.
Residents and road users accused the contractor of poor workmanship and the use of substandard materials, urging the state government to investigate the project.
A taxi driver, Semiu Aderibigbe, said a properly constructed road should withstand heavy rainfall and regular traffic without deteriorating within weeks of completion.
He said, “The government blamed the first damage on blocked drainage, but this latest collapse has happened almost immediately after repairs. That raises serious questions about the quality of the work done.”
Some residents also called for an independent assessment of the project and urged the government to hold the contractor accountable if investigations establish negligence or failure to meet required construction standards.
As of the time this report was filed, the Ogun State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the latest failure of the road.
