Operatives of the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have busted an illegal mining operation along the Ilorin Ogbomosho axis, arresting 10 suspects and impounding nine trucks laden with unlawfully excavated minerals.
The arrests were carried out on Sunday, February 1, 2026, following what the commission described as credible intelligence on illegal mineral excavation and transportation activities spanning parts of Kwara and Oyo states.
In a statement issued on Monday, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the suspects comprised nine truck drivers and one escort who were intercepted during a well coordinated sting operation.
According to the commission, solid minerals recovered from the suspects include lithium, tin, and lepidolite, all allegedly mined without the required licences, permits, or regulatory approvals.
“The suspects do not hold the requisite licences, permits, or regulatory approvals for their mining activities,” Oyewale said, adding that the trucks used in conveying the minerals were also seized as exhibits.
He explained that the operation was part of ongoing efforts by the anti graft agency to clamp down on illegal mining and protect the nation’s solid minerals sector from economic sabotage.
“The suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations,” the EFCC spokesperson stated.
