The Ogun State Government has vowed to prosecute a saw miller, identified as Fatai Quadri, after a viral video captured him mercilessly beating his wife in Ilese Ijebu, Ijebu North East Local Government Area of the state.
In the disturbing footage, the woman, who cried out in Yoruba, could be heard pleading, “Fatai ma pa mi,” which translates to “Fatai, please don’t kill me,” while her husband repeatedly landed blows on her head and neck.
The incident, which occurred on September 15, was secretly recorded by a neighbour said to be fed up with the man’s alleged frequent assaults on his wife.
The footage, which circulated widely on social media, drew outrage from residents and advocacy groups.
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, said the suspect had already been arrested and was under investigation.
“He is currently in custody and the matter has been transferred to the Gender Unit. He will be charged to court on Monday,” the CP assured.
Similarly, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Oluwasina Ogungbade, SAN, condemned the attack, describing it as reprehensible.
“The government is aware of the viral video and we condemn it in its totality. The suspect will be arraigned in court without delay,” Ogungbade said.
Also reacting, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Adijat Adeleye, assured that the state government would follow the case to a logical conclusion.
“Our position has always been zero tolerance for gender-based violence. Justice will be served and the victim will not be abandoned,” she stated.
The Ogun State Government reiterated its commitment to clamp down on gender-based violence and warned that perpetrators of such acts would face the full weight of the law.
