The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially gazetted the Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (Establishment) Act, 2024 — a landmark step that formalizes the creation of the first Federal University in Ogun West Senatorial District.

Published as Government Notice No. 27 in the Federal Republic of Nigeria Official Gazette No. 117, dated 16th May 2025, the development marks a major breakthrough for the people of Yewaland and Ogun West, ending decades of agitation for a federal tertiary institution in the region.

According to the gazette, the bill titled Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (Establishment) Bill, 2024, was passed by the Senate on 8th October 2024 and by the House of Representatives on 29th October 2024. It was duly assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on 16th May 2025.

The law, as stated in the official record, makes “comprehensive provisions for its due management and administration.” It now grants full legal backing for the establishment of the university, opening doors for immediate administrative and academic preparations.

Reacting to the development, the Paramount Ruler of Yewaland and Chairman, Ogun State Council of Obas, Oba (Dr.) Kehinde Gbadewole Olugbenle, expressed immense joy, describing the gazette as “a generational milestone” and a “historic gift” to the people of Ogun West.

He praised Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (YAYI) for his unrelenting efforts in ensuring the Bill moved from legislative approval to executive assent and now, full gazetting. “That this gazette comes in the month of Senator Adeola’s birthday makes it even more symbolic,” the royal father said.

Oba Olugbenle also thanked President Tinubu for his prompt assent, which he said demonstrates a strong commitment to inclusive national development and education equity.
