The Federal Government has restated its commitment to tackling the security challenges confronting the country and has directed paramilitary agencies to raise their performance in line with Tinubu’s renewed security directive.
Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the charge in Abuja during an unscheduled visit to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps FCT Command and the Federal Fire Service station in Wuse Zone 3.
He explained that Tinubu had issued a clear instruction for all agencies under the ministry to be positioned for effective service delivery. According to him, the president expects a new level of efficiency from personnel overseeing internal security.
The minister inspected officers, facilities and ongoing projects, including the newly constructed quarter guard and the training ground under construction. He said the visit was part of the president’s order to ensure all formations are in proper condition to respond to current security challenges.
Tunji-Ojo commended the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, for what he described as a proactive approach to training and service delivery. He noted that “paramilitary is about constant and proactive training for efficiency and effective service delivery.”
He said the corps and sister agencies are taking steps to boost preparedness in combating insecurity, adding that the new training centre for arms guard personnel shows the command is thinking ahead.
“We must keep training, retraining and investing in training so that these gallant officers can continue to give their best to Nigeria,” he said.
The minister assured that the ministry, under Tinubu’s leadership, will continue to support all paramilitary agencies. “The president has given us all the support. So it is my responsibility as the minister under the leadership of Mr President to give all the support and that’s why I am here,” he said.
He urged officers to carry out their duties effectively and with respect for fundamental rights, stressing that the protection of national assets and internal security depends heavily on their work. “Security is life, we are relying on them and Mr President is trusting them to deliver,” he noted.
Tunji-Ojo added that the ministry will continue with unscheduled assessments across commands nationwide to monitor the quality of service Nigerians receive, saying only the best is acceptable.
He, however, expressed displeasure at the state of the Federal Fire Service Wuse station. He said he had raised his concerns with the Controller General and insisted the issues must be corrected to avoid a repeat.
“The fire service is a rescue service agency and a rescue service agency is meant to be prepared for emergency at all times,” he said.
He gave assurance that the ministry will ensure the needed corrections are made.
