The Federal Government has renewed its call on state governments across Nigeria to ban the use of wooden boats for commercial transportation on waterways, urging them to invest in safer fibre and aluminium vessels.

The appeal came from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, following a series of recent boat accidents that claimed multiple lives in various communities. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Bolaji Akinola, on Sunday, Oyetola stressed the urgent need to prioritise passenger safety.

“Waterway users must refuse to board rickety or overloaded boats. No journey is worth risking your life. Avoid night travels, wear life jackets, and prioritise safety above all else,” he said, while extending condolences to families affected by recent tragedies.

The minister highlighted that the reliance on poorly maintained wooden boats and non-compliance with safety regulations remain major causes of accidents. Wooden vessels, he said, are prone to structural failure, especially when overloaded, and deteriorate quickly due to constant exposure to water.

Oyetola argued that replacing wooden boats with fibre-reinforced plastic and aluminium vessels would drastically improve safety. “These modern boats are stronger, more durable, corrosion-resistant, and easier to maintain. They offer better balance and buoyancy and can be fitted with essential safety equipment,” he explained.

Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to safer waterways, Oyetola disclosed that the ministry distributed 35,000 life jackets to riverine states in 2025. He urged state governments to complement federal efforts by providing modern vessels and standard life jackets to passengers, stressing that improving waterway safety requires collaboration across all levels of government.

“Water transportation is a critical part of our blue economy. But it must be safe, regulated, and sustainable. Together, we can put an end to these avoidable tragedies and protect the lives of our citizens,” the minister added.
