The Federal Government has issued a fresh warning about heavy rainfall and possible flooding expected to hit 15 states and 69 communities between September 24 and 28, 2025.

The National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment gave the alert in a statement signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Usman Abdullahi Bokani.

According to the advisory, areas likely to experience flooding include parts of Adamawa, Anambra, Bayelsa, Borno, Delta, Edo, Imo, Kano, Katsina, Ondo, Oyo, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Zamfara States. Communities mentioned in the alert include Yola, Yenagoa, Warri, Benin City, Oguta, Kano, Jibia, Akure, Oyo, Ahoada, Shagari, Serti and Gusau, among others.

The ministry said the warning formed part of its routine early-warning system designed to reduce the loss of lives and property during the peak of the rainy season. It urged residents, state governments and emergency agencies to take precautionary measures to mitigate the impact.

“The heavy rainfall forecast for these locations may lead to flooding in the identified communities and their environs. Stakeholders are therefore advised to prepare adequately and implement preventive actions,” the centre stated.

Flooding remains a major challenge in Nigeria, causing widespread damage to lives, farmlands, infrastructure and livelihoods each year. Data from the National Emergency Management Agency revealed that, as of September 20, no fewer than 232 people had died, 121,224 displaced and 339,658 affected by floods in 2025, while 681 others sustained injuries.

The government’s renewed warning is coming at a time when several parts of the country are still recovering from the devastating effects of earlier floods that submerged homes and disrupted economic activities.

The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to continuous monitoring of weather patterns and timely dissemination of information to help communities prepare ahead of potential disasters.
