Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has commiserated with the family of former Governor of the state, Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, over the death of their mother and matriarch, Chief Mrs Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, who passed on at the age of 100.

The governor, in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Tuesday, described the passing of Mama Onabanjo as a painful loss, noting that the death of a mother leaves a deep vacuum, irrespective of age.

He said her departure marked the end of a remarkable chapter, defined by faith, sacrifice, strength of character and unwavering commitment to family and humanity.

Abiodun said while the family mourns her passing, her long life and enduring impact remain a source of gratitude, adding that Mama Lucia lived a fulfilled life dedicated to God and the service of others.

According to the governor, the late matriarch stood solidly behind her husband, the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, during his defining years in public service and his struggle for democracy, human rights and social justice in Nigeria.

“After a glorious epoch in which she joined her husband, our Papa, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, in the fight for democracy, the delivery of its dividends on a massive scale, and the advancement of human rights and social justice, Mama has now been reunited with Papa in glory,” Abiodun said.

He described Mama Onabanjo as a woman of rare grace and warmth, whose presence brought comfort and encouragement to many, adding that her prayers and goodwill remained a strong pillar of support to those around her.

“Mama was a treasure and a source of joy to all who knew her. She consistently supported us with her prayers and goodwill, spreading joy, comfort and hope to everyone around her,” the governor stated.

Abiodun further praised her role as a devoted wife and mother, noting that she raised children and grandchildren who have distinguished themselves in different fields of human endeavour and have continued to contribute meaningfully to society.

“I commiserate with the Onabanjo family, even as I celebrate them for the great gift that Mama was to all of us. She stood by her husband through thick and thin and raised a family that has continued to break records and serve humanity,” he said.

The governor added that her legacy of love, deep faith, resilience and commitment to development would remain enduring.

“We bless the Lord for her long and fulfilled life. We will miss her warmth, her wise counsel, her passion for progress and her prayers. May the Good Lord grant her eternal rest in His bosom,” Abiodun said.

He prayed that God would grant the Onabanjo family, friends and associates the strength to bear the loss and uphold the values Mama Lucia represented throughout her lifetime.
