A tragic incident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway when a yet-to-be-identified driver, reportedly speeding on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane, struck two schoolgirls at Ogundare bus stop.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to the statement, the victims, aged 12 and 15, were returning home from school when they were hit.
“On Monday, February 24, 2025, at about 3:35 p.m., a driver who is yet to be identified was recklessly speeding on the BRT lane at Ogundare bus stop along Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway when he hit two female pedestrians, siblings aged 12 and 15,” Hundeyin stated.
The impact left both girls with severe injuries. They were immediately rushed to Orile Agege General Hospital for treatment. Tragically, the younger sibling, aged 12, succumbed to her injuries while receiving medical attention.
The older sister was later transferred to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) for further treatment.
Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare M. Jimoh, assured the public that a thorough investigation was already underway to identify and apprehend the fleeing driver.
“A comprehensive and swift investigation is in progress to ensure the culprit is brought to justice”.
“I urge all motorists to strictly adhere to traffic regulations, observe speed limits, and drive responsibly to prevent avoidable tragedies like this”, the statement reads.
Jimoh also extended condolences to the bereaved family, emphasizing that the police would ensure justice is served.
