A hunting expedition in Oyo State has ended in tragedy after a hunter allegedly shot and killed his colleague during a game at Oretan Ijaiye, Akinyele Local Government Area of the state.
The incident involved a 35 year old hunter, Waheed Rasaki, who was said to have accidentally shot another hunter, Femi Oyedepo, while they were on a hunting trip in the forest.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Command, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said the case was reported at the Moniya Police Division on January 7, 2026.
According to the police, “On January 7, 2026, at about 21:20 hours, Waheed Rasaki, male, 35 years, of Oretan Ijaiye area, Moniya, reported that earlier on the same date, at about 14:00 hours, he had mistakenly shot his colleague, Femi Oyedepo, male, during a hunting expedition at Oretan Ijaiye Forest.”
The police spokesperson added that the victim slumped immediately after being shot and died on the spot.
“Police operatives, led by the Divisional Police Officer, promptly visited the scene, discovered the lifeless body, and arrested the suspect, who is currently in police custody,” Olayinka said.
He noted that investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, adding that the command would ensure that justice is served.
In a related development, the Oyo State Police Command also confirmed the arrest of one Olatunji Segun in connection with the killing of a student of Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic, Saki.
DSP Olayinka said the command received a distress call on the same day at about 14:30 hours, reporting a fight among students of the institution at Challenge 1 area behind the school.
“During the altercation, one student sustained a gunshot wound to the back and was rushed to Tunmise Private Hospital, Saki, where the victim later died,” he stated.
The police said an expended cartridge was recovered at the scene, while the suspect has been taken into custody for further investigation.
Commending the officers involved in the operations, the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, praised their swift response and professionalism, assuring residents that the command remains committed to maintaining law and order across the state.
He also urged members of the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with the police by reporting any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
