Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has alleged that there was a plot to kill former President Olusegun Obasanjo with a deadly injection while both men were in prison.
Atiku, who is the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, made the allegation while speaking with journalists in an interview.
According to him, he obtained information about an impending injection that could have killed Obasanjo and subsequently warned the former military ruler against allowing the injection to be administered.
Atiku said a similar incident had allegedly been carried out against the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, adding that he became concerned when he learnt of a plan to subject Obasanjo to a similar fate.
“I saved Obasanjo’s life in prison by leaking information about an impending injection that could have killed him,” Atiku said.
He added, “They did the same to Yar’Adua, and when I learnt they planned to do it to him, I warned him not to allow the injection.”
The former vice-president’s claim comes amid renewed public exchanges between him and Obasanjo over their political differences, particularly the former president’s alleged ambition to remain in office for a third term.
Atiku also accused Obasanjo of now attempting to turn Nigerians against him because of his opposition to the former president’s third-term bid.
“Today, he wants the world to hate me because I opposed his third-term ambition,” he said.
Atiku and Obasanjo served together during Obasanjo’s administration, with Atiku serving as vice-president between 1999 and 2007.
