A massive fire outbreak on Sunday morning razed parts of the Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State, spreading from an industrial facility to nearby residential buildings and forcing residents to flee their homes.
Eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media showed thick black smoke rising into the sky as raging flames engulfed factory structures within the industrial park.
The situation caused panic in the area, with residents seen evacuating as emergency responders battled to contain the blaze.
As of press time, the cause of the fire had not been officially confirmed, and there were no reports of deaths or injuries. However, residents said the incident started around dawn and was believed to have been triggered by a gas explosion at a foam-producing company operating within the Free Trade Zone.
According to the residents, the fire escalated rapidly before firefighters arrived, damaging several nearby homes and properties.
Confirming the incident, the Director of the Ogun State Fire Service, Fatai Adefala, said firefighting teams were deployed immediately to the scene.
“The state firefighters’ team from Agbara and Ota have been on the ground doing the needful for over three hours,” Adefala said in a brief telephone response.
