Abuja – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has directed tertiary institutions involved in flawed admission practices to immediately reverse such admissions.
The board disclosed that in some cases, candidates with higher rankings were overlooked in favour of those with lower scores, a move that violates established admission rules.
The directive was made public in JAMB’s weekly bulletin released on Monday in Abuja by its Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin.
“The attention of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has been drawn to the conduct of admissions by some tertiary institutions, where higher-ranked candidates are reportedly being bypassed in favour of lower-ranked candidates,” the bulletin stated.
JAMB added that decisive action had been taken against the affected institutions and reiterated that admissions must follow the three-tier framework of Merit, Catchment Area, and Educationally Less Developed States, with ranking remaining the key factor at every stage.
The board also addressed a separate claim from a candidate who alleged being unfairly denied admission by the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
According to JAMB, the candidate’s non-admission was due to her ranking relative to others and was not part of the identified irregularities.
JAMB further urged candidates to verify claims of irregularities through official channels and avoid spreading unverified information on social media.
“The Board remains resolute in ensuring that no candidate with a higher ranking is displaced by a lower-ranked candidate in the admission process,” the bulletin emphasized.
