Jigawa State Government has taken a major step to tackle the issue of out-of-school children by distributing over 70 motorcycles to education monitors across the state.
The initiative, launched by the Commissioner for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Isah Chamo, aims to improve access to rural schools and enhance oversight in communities that are hard to reach, especially during the rainy season.
Prof. Chamo explained that the motorcycles were purchased following the approval of Governor Malam Umar Namadi, responding to concerns raised by monitors about difficulties in reaching senior secondary schools. “Some schools are extremely difficult to access, particularly during the rainy season.
These challenges affect effective monitoring and our drive to bring out-of-school children back into classrooms,” he said.
The distribution covers 49 education monitors and 21 members of School-Based Management Committees (SBMCs), ensuring better grassroots monitoring. Monitors will also receive allowances to support vehicle maintenance and logistics.
“With these motorcycles, monitors can reach every part of the state, observe what is happening in schools, and report promptly. This will help government identify problems early and provide support where needed,” the commissioner added.
Authorities expressed optimism that the intervention would boost school enrolment, address absenteeism, and significantly reduce the number of out-of-school children in Jigawa State.
