Motorists on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway were stranded for hours on Monday following a severe accident at the New Garage area. Two vehicles were engulfed in flames, leaving both the inbound and outbound lanes completely blocked.
Traffic heading toward Mowe came to a halt from the Alausa Expressway to the Fatgbems/OPIC roundabout, while motorists traveling into Lagos were trapped from Long Bridge to the same point. Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with drivers forced to abandon vehicles as gridlock worsened.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has been called in to manage the situation, but the fire and the debris on the road have complicated efforts to restore normal traffic flow. Authorities are investigating the cause of the incident.
Commuters have been advised to seek alternative routes while clean-up and emergency operations continue.
