Schools across Lagos State will reopen on Monday, September 14, 2026, for the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session, with the state government urging teachers, administrators and other school personnel to prioritise safety, cleanliness and the wellbeing of learners.
The directive was contained in a press statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and signed by the Commissioner, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun.
The government also welcomed pupils, students, teachers, school administrators, non-teaching staff and other stakeholders back to school.
The government said the new academic session presents another opportunity to strengthen learning, discipline, character development, innovation and excellence across schools in the state.
It congratulated parents, learners and education personnel for their commitment, while urging them to approach the new session with renewed enthusiasm and determination to achieve academic and personal success.
The government stressed that the safety, health and wellbeing of every learner and staff member must remain a collective responsibility as public and private schools resume academic activities.
It advised pupils and students to keep classrooms, toilets, laboratories, playgrounds and other school facilities clean, wash their hands regularly with soap and safe water, and dispose of waste properly in designated bins.
Learners were also advised against sharing personal items such as drinking cups, cutlery and towels, while maintaining good respiratory hygiene by covering their mouths and noses when coughing or sneezing.
The government further urged schools to avoid unnecessary overcrowding, maintain good ventilation in classrooms and other enclosed spaces, and promptly report unsafe conditions, damaged facilities and health concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Teachers, administrators and non-teaching staff were charged to lead by example by maintaining high standards of personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness and safety across school premises.
Schools were also encouraged to ensure that water, sanitation and hygiene facilities remain functional, while classrooms and frequently touched surfaces are cleaned regularly.
The government called on all stakeholders to work together to create schools that are safe, clean, healthy, inclusive and conducive to learning throughout the 2026/2027 academic session.
The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Abisola Dokunmu-Adegbite, wished pupils, students, teachers, school administrators and non-teaching staff a safe, productive and successful academic session.
