Madam Lucia Onabanjo, wife of Ogun State’s first civilian governor, the late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has died at the age of 100.
The family announced her death in a statement issued on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo.
According to the statement, Madam Onabanjo passed away peacefully on Monday after a long and fulfilled life.
The statement read in part, “The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, yet with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
“Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925 to 2026) was called to glory on Monday, January 11. We thank God for her long and fulfilled life, and for the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind. May her soul rest in perfect peace.”
Madam Lucia Onabanjo was widely regarded as the matriarch of the Onabanjo family and was respected for her quiet strength, devotion to family values, and support for her husband during his years in public service.
Her late husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, served as the first civilian governor of Ogun State from 1979 to 1983. He was also a renowned journalist and public commentator, best known for his widely read weekly column, Ayekooto. He died in 1990.
Family sources described Madam Onabanjo as a woman of deep faith who lived a disciplined and purposeful life, leaving behind generations of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who continue to uphold her values.
Details of burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the family at a later date.
