The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has raided major markets in Lagos State, shutting down distributors involved in the sale of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles below 200 millilitres.
The agency said products worth an estimated ₦300 million were seized during enforcement operations carried out in parts of the state.
The enforcement exercise covered Ile-Epo Market, where some distributors and retailers were arrested, as well as Ojuwoye Market in Mushin and Oke-Arin Market on Lagos Island.
According to the agency, its officials evacuated several cartons of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET bottles from the affected locations.
The operation followed intelligence indicating that some distributors and retailers were allegedly hoarding the prohibited products amid increased demand and rising prices.
NAFDAC maintained that the ban on the manufacture, distribution, sale and use of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET bottles below 200ml remains in force.
The agency warned distributors, retailers and other operators in the alcoholic beverage trade against violating the regulation, stressing that offenders would face enforcement action.
It also urged members of the public to desist from patronising prohibited alcoholic products and to report suspected violations to the agency.
