The Ogun State Government on Monday clarified that it has not anointed any candidate for the vacant Awujale stool, following reports circulating in the media and on social media suggesting otherwise.

The government issued a stern warning that anyone found fabricating, promoting, or circulating false claims regarding the selection of the next Awujale would face investigation and possible prosecution under relevant laws.

The statement was issued by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Hon. Ganiyu Hamzat.

“The public should note that the selection process for the Awujale is governed strictly by customary law, established chieftaincy declarations, and the extant laws of Ogun State,” the statement partly read.

The warning followed the nomination meeting of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, the family designated to produce the next Awujale of Ijebu land. A total of 95 contestants—94 princes and a princess—emerged for the stool at the meeting held at Bisrod Hall, GRA, Ijebu Ode.

Hamzat cautioned that the deliberate spread of false information or publications capable of causing tension or unrest in Ijebuland would not be tolerated.

He called on the media, opinion leaders, and the public to verify information through official channels and avoid actions that could undermine peace and the integrity of traditional institutions.

The statement further emphasized that the government would invoke Section 23(2) of the Obas and Chiefs Law of Ogun State, 2021, against anyone parading themselves as Awujale-elect before the completion of the official selection process.

The Awujale stool became vacant in July last year following the death of 91-year-old Oba Sikiru Adetona, who reigned for 65 years, leaving the people of Ijebu land awaiting the enthronement of a new monarch.

The government reiterated its commitment to fairness, transparency, and respect for Ijebuland’s cultural heritage, assuring residents that the selection process would be conducted strictly in line with tradition and the law.
