The Ogun State Government has ordered an immediate halt on the reconstruction of the Paddy Arikawe road in the G.R.A. area of Sagamu, warning all contractors in the state to strictly adhere to government specifications or risk losing their jobs.
The stop-work directive, issued on Monday, December 15, by the Ogun State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, targeted Slavabogu Nigeria Limited, the contractor handling the 3.39-kilometre project.
The decision followed reports from the resident engineer that the contractor had commenced drainage works using singly reinforced steel, contrary to the doubly reinforced steel specified in the contract.
In line with the order, the contractor was instructed to demolish all existing concrete bases, remove the reinforcement steel, and reconstruct the drainage using Grade 30 concrete with the correct reinforcement detailing.
The Ministry emphasized that the walls had not yet been cast, allowing for corrective action before compromising the structural integrity of the road.
A statement signed by Hon. Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Media and Strategy, reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to delivering durable roads that meet safety standards.
He noted that previous phases of the road, including a 260-metre segment under a constituency project of Senator Gbenga Daniel, had also attracted stop-work orders due to non-compliance with specifications.
“The Dapo Abiodun administration is fully committed to the delivery of quality roads that will stand the test of time.’
“This action is driven by safety considerations. We hereby warn all state contractors to follow specifications religiously, as there is no room for shoddy works that would compromise the safety of Ogun citizens,” Akinmade said.
The government highlighted that while the initial proposal by the Ogun East senator indicated that the Federal Government would take six to seven years to complete the remaining sections of the road, the Dapo Abiodun administration awarded the project to expedite completion and improve the lives of residents in the area.
