Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Olumo Rock into the country’s premier tourism destination.

He noted that tourism will now take center stage in the state’s economic strategy, emphasizing its vast revenue-generating potential.

Speaking during an inspection of the historical site on Wednesday, Abiodun stressed that Olumo Rock, which welcomed over 20,000 visitors in 2024, represents the rich cultural heritage of Egbaland and Ogun State.

He assured that the government would embark on a structured plan to give the site a world-class uplift.

“Now, the tables have finally turned to tourism, and we are going to be very deliberate about pushing the frontier in our tourist development,” the governor said.

Highlighting the economic viability of tourism, Abiodun referenced countries that have successfully transitioned from oil dependence to tourism-driven economies.

“Tourism, with the potential it offers, is not just an avenue for revenue generation. We have seen nations whose main source of income is tourism. There are countries that have shifted from reliance on oil, and today, 70 percent of their revenue comes from tourism,” he added.

The governor acknowledged Olumo Rock as Ogun State’s foremost tourist attraction and pledged that his administration would take deliberate steps to ensure its preservation and enhancement.

He warned that neglecting such historic sites could lead to gradual deterioration.

“This site is a living testament to our deep-rooted history, culture, and tradition. We must do everything possible to protect and sustain it because it serves as a bridge between the past and the present. Long after we are gone, it will continue to tell the story of our heritage,” he said.

Commending those who have maintained the site, Abiodun assured that the government would take necessary steps to improve its condition.

“I have taken note of some areas that require urgent attention, and I can assure you that this administration will take decisive action. We have made significant progress in infrastructure, education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, social development, and agriculture. Now, we will ensure that Olumo Rock gets the attention it truly deserves,” he stated.

Abiodun emphasized that a comprehensive plan would be rolled out to reposition Olumo Rock as a world-class tourist attraction, ensuring it receives the befitting status it merits.
