Umuahia – The Abia State Government has received 28,213 applications for 4,000 teaching positions, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, announced on Monday.
The disclosure came during a briefing in Umuahia following the state executive council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
According to Kanu, this recruitment forms the second phase of the state’s teacher employment exercise, which opened on November 6, 2025, and closed on November 29, 2025. Applicants were subsequently given a verification window to review and correct their submissions.
“The verification window closes this week. Successful candidates will proceed to computer-based tests, followed by interviews.”
This exercise aims to employ an additional 4,000 teachers, adding to the 5,394 teachers recruited last year,” he said.
Kanu also highlighted measures to enhance safety in schools, noting the inauguration of the Abia State Safe Schools Steering Committee.
The committee is tasked with coordinating the implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration and developing protection protocols for educational institutions across the state.
The commissioner further spoke on the state government’s digital initiatives, including the establishment of a Document Installation Bureau for land records, a centralized online recruitment platform, a redesigned official website, and the e-Health Project, which automates hospital records in six pilot institutions. Laptops have also been distributed to senior government officials to boost digital efficiency.
Kanu added that education officers will monitor school resumption to ensure compliance, while infrastructure, equipment, and teacher training for the state’s smart schools are progressing, with two schools expected to be commissioned in February.
On transport, Kanu reported that the state’s urban mass transit operation, launched on December 24, 2025, has recorded strong public response during its pilot phase, with over 31,500 passengers benefiting from free rides. Full commercial operations are expected to commence soon.
