A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tanker explosion near Karu Bridge, Abuja, has left several people feared dead and many others injured, causing panic in the area on Wednesday evening, March 19, 2025.
Eyewitnesses recounted scenes of chaos as flames engulfed vehicles and trapped motorists screamed for help. A distressing video obtained by our correspondent captured frantic voices calling for urgent intervention.
According to reports, the tanker lost control near the Karu Bridge, located between Kugbo and Nyanya on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway, before crashing into multiple vehicles and igniting a massive fire.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD) confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at 7:14 PM.
“It was a ghastly accident. The driver of the CNG truck lost control, ran into other motorists, and caused an explosion,” said Mark Nyam, the Head of Forecasting, Response, and Mitigation at FEMD.
Emergency responders, including FEMD, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service, the Nigeria Police Force, and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), were swiftly deployed to the scene.
Authorities are yet to confirm the exact number of casualties, but rescue operations are ongoing.
