Online shopping has made life easier from clothes and gadgets to groceries, you can buy almost anything from your phone. But along with convenience comes a rising wave of fraud. Every week, people fall victim to fake sellers who disappear after payment, or websites that deliver something completely different from what was advertised.

One lady once shared how she ordered a designer handbag online only to receive a nylon purse that wasn’t even worth ₦1,000. The seller vanished after collecting her payment. Sadly, these stories are becoming more common.

Beyond the Ballot: Shaping a Bar That Works for All

1. Buy from Verified Platforms

Stick to trusted websites and stores that have verifiable contact details, customer reviews, and secure payment options. Be careful with random Instagram or WhatsApp vendors who only accept transfers.

2. Check for Red Flags

If prices look unbelievably low, or the seller is rushing you to “buy now before it’s gone,” pause and think. Scammers often create urgency to push quick payments.

3. Inspect Website Links Carefully

Fake e-commerce sites often use web addresses that look similar to real ones, like “jum1a.com” or “k0nga.shop.” Always double-check the spelling before entering your details.

4. Avoid Direct Transfers

Use payment gateways that offer buyer protection, like Paystack or Flutterwave. If a seller insists on transfer only, consider it a warning sign.

5. Keep Evidence of All Transactions

Save screenshots of conversations, receipts, and product descriptions. These can help if you need to report fraud or seek a refund

Online shopping can be safe and convenient when done wisely. Don’t let discounts or excitement cloud your judgment, scammers thrive on trust and haste. Take a few extra minutes to verify before you pay.
