Tottenham Hotspur have made history by winning their first European title in over four decades, narrowly defeating Manchester United 1-0 in the UEFA Europa League final on Wednesday night.

The tense showdown took place at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao, where the only goal came in the 42nd minute through an unfortunate own goal.

A driven cross by Tottenham’s Pape Matar Sarr ricocheted off United defender Luke Shaw and found its way into the net. Though it went down as an own goal, Brennan Johnson was credited for his contribution to the attacking play.

“The boys gave everything out there,” said Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou. “It wasn’t pretty, but it was all about grit, heart, and determination. I’m proud of them.”

While Manchester United enjoyed greater possession throughout the match, they failed to convert their control into clear-cut chances. Their best opportunities came late in the game: a header by Rasmus Højlund that was cleared off the line by Micky van de Ven, and a dramatic 97th-minute effort from Luke Shaw that was denied by Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

“We kept knocking, but the door wouldn’t open,” United captain Bruno Fernandes remarked after the match. “It’s a hard one to take, especially considering how close we were.”

Despite the lack of fluid play and attacking flair, the stakes couldn’t have been higher. Tottenham were chasing their first European triumph since their 1984 UEFA Cup win, while United sought a third consecutive season capped with silverware.

The win not only ended Spurs’ 17-year wait for a trophy but also sealed their spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League — a massive boost for the North London club.
