Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has declared that tourism must serve as a major driver of job creation, empowerment, and inclusive growth across the state, as part of efforts to diversify the economy and position Ogun as Nigeria’s leading cultural and creative tourism destination.

Speaking at the 48th edition of the World Tourism Day celebration held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, and themed “Tourism for Sustainable Transformation”, the governor, represented by his deputy, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to building a tourism sector that empowers citizens and tells the Ogun story to the world.

Abiodun explained that his government has moved beyond physical infrastructure to focus strongly on inclusivity and empowerment through training and skill acquisition programmes in tourism-related ventures, particularly Adire production, which has now gained global attention on international fashion runways.

“Our creative economy is being nurtured to tell the Ogun story in ways that resonate locally and internationally,” he said.

He further disclosed that the state has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government to establish the Renewed Hope Cultural Village, a project aimed at preserving historical sites, empowering young creatives, and strengthening Ogun’s cultural tourism landscape.

Delivering the United Nations Secretary-General’s message, the State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Sesan Fagbayi, described tourism as a powerful engine of opportunity capable of creating jobs, strengthening human connections, and driving inclusive change.

“Tourism must be inclusive, equitable, and green if it is to truly fulfill its promise of sustainable transformation,” Fagbayi said.

In his own remarks, the commissioner reaffirmed the state’s commitment to advancing tourism through cultural heritage promotion, community-based initiatives, and landmark events such as the Gateway Games, which have boosted cultural engagement and visitor inflow.

He also pointed out that investments in infrastructure, especially access roads, have improved tourist access to major attractions across the state, including Olumo Rock, which has undergone significant transformation under the current administration.

“The transformation of the iconic Olumo Rock Tourist Centre remains one of the most remarkable achievements of this government,” Fagbayi noted, adding that the renovations have enhanced tourist experiences and reinforced Ogun’s position as Nigeria’s true tourism hub.

Fagbayi urged all stakeholders to collaborate with the government in building a sustainable and inclusive tourism industry that creates jobs and uplifts the living standards of the people.

“All hands must be on deck to create jobs and improve the living standards of our people through tourism,” he emphasized.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Culture and Tourism, Prince Adebola Basibo-Odoru, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to aligning its tourism agenda with global sustainability principles.

He said the government is promoting eco-friendly practices, supporting community-driven initiatives, and investing in cultural preservation and innovation.

Basibo-Odoru assured that the Abiodun-led administration will continue to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that tourism remains a catalyst for inclusive and enduring growth across Ogun State.
