No fewer than five persons, including two female children and three adults, have lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Akure-Ado Ekiti Expressway, at Ita Ogbolu, headquarters of Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The tragic incident, which happened on Sunday, involved a truck and a bus, leaving several others injured.
Confirming the development, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in the state, Samuel Ibitoye, said preliminary investigations showed that the accident was caused by speeding and a head-on collision on a section of the road currently under construction.
He said, “Five people died in the accident, including two male adults, a female adult, and two female children. It was caused by speeding occasioning head-on collision on a road under construction.”
A viral video from the scene posted on Facebook by Bola Awofisayo captured the lifeless bodies of the victims laid beside the road, while the bus driver was seen trapped behind one of the vehicles involved in the crash.
FRSC operatives later evacuated the victims and cleared the scene to ease traffic flow.
The Sector Commander appealed to motorists to always adhere to speed limits and drive with caution, especially on roads under construction.
He said, “We urge motorists to be mindful of traffic rules and regulations to avoid preventable tragedies like this. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of crashes on our roads.”
