Two persons lost their lives while two others escaped unhurt after a truck collided with a commercial bus at Ogere Junction along the Ijebu Ode-Benin Expressway in Ogun State in the early hours of Thursday.
The fatal crash, which occurred at about 5:10 a.m., involved a white Mack truck with registration number ABC660XC and an orange Peugeot J5 bus with no visible registration number.
The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, Florence Okpe, on Thursday.
According to the statement, four adult male occupants were involved in the crash. Two of them died while the remaining two escaped without injuries.
The FRSC attributed the accident to route violation and excessive speeding. The impact of the collision caused the Peugeot J5 bus to catch fire, leaving its front section completely burnt.
The statement added that FRSC rescue operatives arrived at the scene within two minutes after receiving the distress call and immediately commenced rescue and traffic control operations.
Traffic on the affected section of the expressway was diverted to the alternative carriageway to ensure the free flow of vehicles while officials cleared the wreckage.
The corps said the remains of the deceased were evacuated by officers of the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division, Ogbere Division, and deposited at a nearby mortuary.
Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sympathised with the families of the victims and urged motorists to comply with traffic regulations.
He warned drivers against speeding and route violations, particularly during periods of poor visibility and on wet roads, stressing that such dangerous driving habits remain major causes of fatal road crashes.
Ogunjobi reaffirmed the command’s commitment to improving road safety through sustained enforcement, public enlightenment campaigns and prompt rescue operations. He also advised motorists to maintain safe speeds and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey.
The latest accident comes barely two days after the FRSC disclosed that 161 people lost their lives in 415 road crashes recorded across Ogun State between January and May 2026, while 1,007 others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the period.
