Mike Ejeagha, the legendary Nigerian Highlife musician famed for embedding Igbo folklore, proverbs, and storytelling into music, has passed on at the age of 95.

His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the passing in a phone conversation. “Yes, my father is gone. He died peacefully after a long battle with illness,” he told Vanguard.

Ejeagha was a towering figure in the Nigerian music scene, especially during the 1980s when his unique folk-influenced sound dominated the airwaves. He was known for his distinct storytelling technique that preserved and celebrated the Igbo heritage through music. Many of his songs became cultural treasures and are still taught in schools and performed at traditional gatherings.

Over the decades, Mike Ejeagha earned a reputation not only as a musician but also as a custodian of indigenous knowledge. His music was widely regarded for its moral teachings and deep philosophical messages drawn from everyday Igbo life.

Reacting to the news of his passing, a fan and culture enthusiast, Ifeanyi Ugwu, said: “Mike Ejeagha wasn’t just a musician, he was a living archive of Igbo wisdom. His music has helped shape generations and preserve our language and culture.”

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the country, especially from the Southeast, where Ejeagha’s influence was most deeply felt. Social media platforms have also seen an outpouring of grief and appreciation for his contributions to African music and oral tradition.

Though he may have left the physical world, his legacy endures through the rich catalog of music that continues to inspire and educate.

“He was a legend in every sense. Even in his old age, his name still commanded respect in cultural and academic circles,” said cultural researcher Chidinma Anozie. “His death is a great loss, but his work lives on.”

Mike Ejeagha is survived by children, grandchildren, and admirers across the globe who will forever remember his voice, his wisdom, and his lifelong devotion to culture through music.
