The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) deepened on Sunday as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced his withdrawal from all previous reconciliation agreements reached to foster peace and unity within the opposition party.

In a detailed statement personally signed and dated May 25, 2025, Wike expressed regret that despite concerted efforts to stabilize the PDP and restore unity after the 2023 general elections, acts of dishonesty and betrayal among key stakeholders had rendered such efforts futile.

“I have now firmly decided to pull out of all agreements hitherto reached. I have decided to fight on until justice is attained,” Wike declared, signaling a fresh wave of turbulence within the party hierarchy.

The former Rivers State Governor said his decision followed multiple breaches of agreements by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

He accused both governors of orchestrating actions that violated the resolutions reached at various meetings held to reconcile aggrieved party members.

“At the meeting in Saraki’s Guest House, we reached agreements. But even before the Bukola Saraki Reconciliation Committee could begin work, these agreements were already being crudely violated,” he said.

Wike alleged that Makinde, in collaboration with Mbah, influenced a meeting of some South-East leaders who threatened to pull out of the party if Ude Okoye was not adopted as the PDP National Secretary, in direct opposition to the Supreme Court-affirmed position of Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Furthermore, Wike accused Makinde of engineering a move at the PDP National Secretariat to allow the Deputy National Secretary to act as National Secretary, despite their collective agreement to uphold Anyanwu’s position.

He also referenced a controversial letter signed by the Deputy National Secretary calling for a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, and a contradictory statement discrediting the party’s official endorsement of its Anambra State governorship candidate—moves he described as “provocative and annoying.”

On May 24 in Jos, Wike said a properly organized zonal congress was aborted after INEC refused to attend due to the invitation letter being signed by the wrong official, further proving, according to him, that the party was disregarding due process.

“These actions are in complete violation of the agreements reached and would not do the party any good whatsoever,” Wike stated.

He emphasized his long-standing loyalty to the PDP since 1998, noting that he had made no personal demands despite supporting the electoral victories of several governors.

“What is more painful is that I contributed substantially to most of these governors winning their elections, yet I have not made any personal demands on any of them and I would never do so,” he said.

Wike concluded that while he had hoped mutual trust and party loyalty would prevail, it had become obvious that some leaders were “playing games to the detriment of the party.” As a result, he said he would no longer honour any reconciliation frameworks or gentleman’s agreements moving forward.
