Championship side Norwich City have sacked head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup following a poor run of form, announcing that ex-Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshere will take over as interim manager for the remaining two games of the season.
The 36-year-old Danish coach was brought in on a three-year contract in May 2024 to succeed David Wagner, who had been dismissed after the club’s failed promotion bid. But after suffering three consecutive defeats, Norwich have opted for a change in leadership.
Assistant head coach Glen Riddersholm has also left the club.
Sporting Director Ben Knapper explained the decision, saying, “Whilst we made this appointment with a long-term focus and in line with our wider club strategy and direction, unfortunately, recent results and performances have deemed it necessary for us to make a change.”
Wilshere, 32, who made over 100 appearances for Arsenal and was once regarded as one of England’s brightest midfield talents, had been working behind the scenes as part of Thorup’s coaching staff. He now steps in as caretaker for the final stretch of the season.
“It’s a huge honour and a big moment in my coaching journey,” Wilshere said, according to a source close to the club. “Norwich is a proud club with passionate supporters, and I’ll do everything I can to help the players finish strong.”
Norwich, who were relegated from the Premier League in 2022, are currently 14th in the Championship table and out of contention for a play-off spot.
The club is expected to begin the search for a permanent manager in the summer.
