King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the monarch of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom and the world’s youngest reigning king, has died at the age of 34.

The monarch’s death was announced on Friday by the Prime Minister of the Tooro Kingdom, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, who said King Oyo died on Thursday. The announcement was contained in a statement reported by PUNCH Newspapers.

Akiiki described the monarch’s death as an “immeasurable loss” to the royal family and the people of Tooro, while calling on them to remain united, calm and prayerful during the difficult period.

“I call upon all the people of Tooro to remain united, calm and prayerful during this profoundly difficult time,” he said.

“May His Majesty the King rest in eternal peace.”

The cause of death was not immediately disclosed. However, Ugandan media reports quoted a government minister as saying that the monarch had been critically ill and was receiving treatment in the United States.

King Oyo ascended the throne in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Rukidi III. Due to his young age, a regency was established to oversee the affairs of the kingdom until he attained adulthood.

He was formally crowned in 2010 at the age of 18.

Guinness World Records recognised Oyo as the world’s youngest reigning monarch, a title he retained after inheriting the throne as a toddler.

The Tooro Kingdom, also known as Toro, is one of Uganda’s traditional kingdoms. Although the country operates under an elected government and its traditional kingdoms have no constitutional political authority, they continue to wield significant cultural influence.

King Oyo was the 13th monarch of Tooro, a kingdom founded in the early 19th Century. During his 31-year reign, he became a prominent cultural figure in Uganda and supported causes including youth empowerment, education, climate conservation and HIV/AIDS awareness.

Succession assured

Despite the monarch not being officially married, the Tooro Kingdom said the royal succession would continue, with Akiiki confirming that King Oyo left behind a son who would serve as his heir.

“The continuity of the Crown is assured,” the Prime Minister said.

“His Majesty leaves behind a Prince as his heir, whose identity will be formally revealed at the appropriate time, in accordance with the traditions and customs of Tooro Kingdom.”

The Tooro Kingdom operates a hereditary system of succession.

Tributes have since begun to pour in from traditional institutions across Uganda, including the Buganda Kingdom, the country’s largest and most influential traditional institution, which expressed condolences to the people of Tooro.
