Bruno Fernandes converted a stoppage-time penalty to hand Manchester United a dramatic 3-2 victory over Burnley in a thrilling Premier League clash at Old Trafford on Saturday.
United had taken the lead in the 27th minute when Josh Cullen turned the ball into his own net under pressure, but Burnley hit back after the interval.
Lyle Foster equalised in the 55th minute before Bryan Mbeumo, making his mark with his first Premier League goal for United, restored the hosts’ advantage two minutes later.
Burnley refused to back down, however, as Jaidon Anthony pounced on a goalkeeping error from Altay Bayindir to level the score in the 66th minute, silencing the home crowd.
The drama reached its peak deep into stoppage time when Amad Diallo was pulled back by Anthony as he surged into the box.
Referee Sam Barrott initially waved play on, but following a lengthy VAR review, the penalty was awarded.
Fernandes, who had missed from the spot against Fulham just a week earlier, showed composure to send Burnley goalkeeper Arijanet Muric the wrong way in the 97th minute, sparking wild celebrations at Old Trafford.
“It was a very difficult match, but we kept believing until the end. I had to make up for last week’s miss, and I’m glad I could help the team,” Fernandes said after the match.
The win gives Ruben Amorim’s side three vital points after a shaky start to the season, while Burnley were left to rue a late lapse that denied them what would have been a valuable draw.
