The Adamawa State Government has confirmed the death of eight residents following the outbreak of a flesh-eating ulcer suspected to be Buruli ulcer in Malabu, Fufore Local Government Area of the state.

Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Felix Tangwami, who addressed journalists in Yola on Tuesday evening, described the development as “deeply concerning,” adding that samples have already been collected from affected patients and sent to the National Reference Laboratory for further confirmation.

Tangwami explained that while awaiting test results, health authorities had placed Malabu under close surveillance to prevent further spread. According to him, “some of the surviving patients are currently receiving specialised medical care at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola.”

He noted that medical teams from his ministry are working round the clock to stabilise patients while the state government is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health, the World Health Organisation (WHO), and other development partners to contain the outbreak.

“Measures include immediate deployment of emergency response teams, awareness campaigns, and provision of medical supplies to the affected community,” Tangwami said. He urged residents to maintain good hygiene and report any unusual skin ulcers or swellings promptly for medical attention.

The government assured the public that efforts are being intensified to control the outbreak and prevent further casualties.
