A Nigerian man identified as Victor Benjamin Fajemirokun, who was declared wanted over the killing of an official of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Mrs Funmilayo Lasisi, and her daughter, Sewa, has been arrested in Ghana after weeks in hiding.
Security sources confirmed that the 36 year old fled Nigeria shortly after the disappearance and death of the victims.
He was later traced to Ghana by operatives of the country’s Eastern South Regional Police Command.
The Regional Commander, George Ohene Boadi, told journalists that officers acted after receiving intelligence linked to a viral video circulating online.
The video alleged that the suspect abducted and killed the FRSC officer and her daughter in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
According to him, “The suspect was wanted by the Nigerian police, but he ran to Ghana to hide with his friends. The Eastern South Regional Police Command, upon receiving information that he was hiding in his friend’s home in Akutia, immediately deployed personnel who arrested him in his hideout.”
He added that the suspect is in custody and that arrangements are ongoing to hand him over to Nigerian authorities.
“The suspect will be handed over to Nigerian authorities as soon as all procedures are completed. We are committed to supporting this investigation,” the Ghanaian police authorities said.
Funmilayo and her daughter had reportedly travelled with the suspect to Osun State on November 2, but they never returned. Investigations later linked their disappearance to Fajemirokun and a self-styled herbalist who is still on the run.
Police sources revealed that two additional suspects were picked up in Osun and Ekiti during covert operations. Their statements reportedly guided detectives to the remains of the victims, found in a bushy area.
The Ogun State Police Command earlier described the killing of the officer and her young daughter as “inhuman, callous and unacceptable,” assuring that all connected individuals would be tracked and prosecuted.
