A technical staff member of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has sustained injuries after suffering an electric shock while carrying out maintenance work on an 11kV feeder in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The incident occurred at about 6:20 p.m. on Saturday in the Ado-Poly Satellite Campus area, according to a statement issued on Tuesday by the company’s Head of Branding and Corporate Communications, Mrs Evelyn Gbiwen.

She identified the injured employee as Mr Akinyemi Bamidele, a technical linesman, who reportedly sustained burns to his arm and other parts of his body while performing an operational task on the 11kV Basiri Feeder following scheduled maintenance.

Gbiwen said the injured worker was immediately rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado-Ekiti, where he is receiving medical treatment.

She disclosed that Bamidele is in a stable condition and responding positively to treatment.

The spokesperson reaffirmed BEDC’s commitment to the safety and welfare of its workforce, noting that the company is providing the necessary support to the injured employee throughout his recovery.

“BEDC Electricity Plc remains committed to the safety and well-being of its employees and is providing the necessary support to the injured staff member during this period,” the statement read.

Gbiwen added that the electricity distribution company has commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

She said appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation, with the aim of preventing similar occurrences in future. The company did not disclose the immediate cause of the electrical accident.
