In a bid to curb youth involvement in crime, Abiodun Oladimeji Lasile, the founder of The SixthSense Initiative and the Orunto Baalufe of Owu Kingdom, has called for a stronger reading culture among young people.
Lasile made this appeal during a visit to the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Lanre Ogunlowo, at the Eleweran Police Headquarters on Friday.
The discussion centered on the role of education and reading in shaping the mindset of the youth and steering them away from crime.
Speaking on the importance of literacy, Lasile stressed that reading is a powerful tool for positive change, stating, “Reading is not just a hobby; it is a powerful tool that can shape young minds and steer them away from crime. A well-read youth is less likely to engage in cultism, drug abuse, and other social vices.”
He commended CP Ogunlowo for his swift and decisive actions in tackling crime since assuming office, particularly in the fight against kidnapping and other security threats. He encouraged the police chief to sustain these efforts to ensure a safer Ogun State.
In response, CP Ogunlowo acknowledged the significance of education and parental involvement in youth development. “We need a collective effort to ensure that our children are not only educated but also engaged in positive activities that build their character,” he stated.
He emphasized that fostering a reading culture could equip young individuals with knowledge and critical thinking skills, helping them make informed decisions and stay away from criminal activities.
The meeting signaled a potential collaboration between The SixthSense Initiative and the Ogun State Police Command, with both parties looking to develop programs that encourage reading among young people.
As part of the initiative’s broader vision, Lasile expressed optimism that increased literacy among youth would contribute significantly to reducing crime rates, urging parents, schools, and community leaders to join forces in promoting a reading culture.
