Former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Amb. Illiya Damagum, on Tuesday handed over the affairs of the party to the newly constituted National Working Committee led by Tanimu Turaki.
The transition took place at the Bauchi State Governor’s Lodge in Abuja. Some former members of the NWC were also present.
The handover comes as the tenure of the previous committee ends on December 8, even as the party continues to deal with internal disputes involving the camp of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Damagum told the gathering that the new NWC has been given the task of stabilising and rebuilding the party.
According to him, their experience would serve as a guide as they take over the leadership.
He admitted that the Turaki-led team is coming in during a difficult period but expressed optimism.
He said, “The beauty of it is that we were able to surmount all the obstacles that we faced and we will continue to surmount them.”
He added that the PDP remains strong and still the party to beat. “That’s why they lose sleep about PDP. They keep putting different hurdles in our way, but God will see us through. We are positive. God is a just God; He does not support injustice.”
Damagum warned that those fuelling the crisis in the party may have temporary relief, but they would eventually answer for their actions.
In his response, Turaki praised the outgoing NWC for their efforts and promised to continue working for the progress of the PDP.
