Asaba – The Delta State Police Command has arraigned 33 suspects for their involvement in violent disturbances and acts of public nuisance across the state during the recently concluded Yuletide celebrations.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this in a statement issued in Warri on Tuesday.
He explained that the suspects were apprehended during the New Year’s Eve security operations in Asaba.
“For clarity, several suspects were arrested at different locations within Asaba for offences including violent disturbances, public nuisance, drug-related activities, and conduct likely to breach public peace during the New Year’s Eve operations,” Edafe said.
He added that, following preliminary investigations, 33 suspects were found to have prima facie cases against them and were arraigned before Magistrate Court 1, Asaba. Three of the suspects have been remanded in custody, while the others were granted bail.
Addressing circulating reports, Edafe clarified, “Contrary to the false narrative by Sahara Reporters, the individual referenced was not arrested as a church worshipper nor rearrested for any alleged media interaction.”
“He was apprehended along with two others in a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, allegedly purchasing illicit drugs from a suspected dealer. Incriminating exhibits were recovered at the scene.”
He further noted that one of the suspects, being a member of a sister security agency, was granted bail and released to his institution pending arraignment.
Edafe emphasized that the grant of bail does not imply innocence and that investigation and prosecution remain ongoing.
